Tom Sherman, Roy Ascott and myself were commissioners to the 42nd Venice Biennale responsible for a section on art and technology. Aside from having a number of exceptional artists’ installations by people like David Rokeby and Bill Viola, we built a communications lab that ran for several weeks with exchange happening over internet, slowscan, fax, teletext and even minitel.
One of my contributions was to build a computer network using Macintosh computers and modems to links several cities, mostly in France, for an image exchange. The lab was run by two young French artists, Jean-René Bader and Jacques-Elie Chabert.
